Google, watch videos and go to the blog to .... hold the news
Audiences who want to keep up with current news are increasingly targeting online search engines, video clips and blogs to satisfy their "thirst for information", research firm Hitwise said.
Traffic to the top 10 newspapers and media websites in the US has dropped by nearly 4% in the past year, as users shift to favoring "unofficial news channels". In the meantime, websites that specialize in synthesizing the hottest news of the day saw the number of registered readers soaring.
Of these, Yahoo! News is the top news website with more than 6.5% market share. A Weather Channel's website is second with 4.75% of US traffic. CNN surpassed MSNBC in "breathtaking posture" to take the No. 3 position with 3.95%.
Source: Mobilemag News is still an array that Google cannot compete with rival Yahoo. Its Google News service is only ranked fifth in popularity with 1.83% of total traffic only.
According to Hitwise, search engines, online news aggregators and web portals are key sources of information for readers in a digital age, instead of the mainstream news websites.
Many people have used Google to access the websites of familiar newspapers, instead of typing the address directly into the address bar. According to statistics, the number of users who choose this "roundabout" solution has increased by nearly 30% in the past 12 months.
Similarly, traffic from Google to official television or radio websites also increased by 35.9%. The proportion of users who left professional journalism websites to jump to watch related video clips on websites like YouTube jumped dramatically: 196%.
