Scientists have unearthed an underground city of ants with a labyrinth of roads that was likened to China 's Great Wall.

According to the Daily Mail , a group of scientists led by Professor Luis Forgi discovered a large ant city located just below the ground in Brazil. Experts say this used to be the home of millions of insects.

The metropolis abandoned and buried underground has a network of interconnected roads and mushroom gardens (derived from vegetables and fruits collected by workers). This is said to be the kingdom of one of the world's largest ants : leaf-cutting ants . However, it is unclear when and when the leaf ants leave this underground city and what is the cause of that action.

Experts poured dozens of tons of concrete into the holes on the ground (which acted as air-conditioning pipes of ants) to reveal the underground network. It took them 10 days to complete the concrete pouring out of the 46.5m 2 tunnel maze and stretched nearly 8m below the ground. After a month, scientists began digging and discovering a metropolis described as 'rivaling China's Great Wall' .

The community of ants proved their extraordinary ability to build their giant kingdom. Each worker ant has certainly had to dig and remove piles of soil weighing many times its weight throughout the journey equivalent to more than 0.8km. In total, they dug up about 40 tons of land to create the labyrinth in the city, demonstrating 'The Secret Power of Nature' as in the documentary of Dr. Bert Hölldobler of the University of Arizona (USA).

Leaf cut ants have created such countless cities throughout the Americas. This leaf-eating species is believed to have the second most complex social organization on Earth, after humans.

Each ant kingdom is under the rule of a queen. Each queen will receive 300 million sperm of male ants before establishing its empire. After that, the queen's children will take over the construction of the common house and collect food. The size of each of these ants will determine its mission and status.

The only task of the other ants will be to take care of the waste. They tend to be older individuals in society. One of their jobs is to eliminate dangerous parasites, such as phorid flies - which spread the destructive germs by laying eggs on cracks on the worker ants.

Larger ants are assembled into a regular army to fight any enemy of the community. Each member of this army can carry 50 times its weight. And similar to the armed forces in human society, ants sometimes also support worker ants in technical projects such as digging tunnels.
