Most infections have occurred in recent weeks, but the outbreak has not developed to the point of becoming a nationwide pandemic.

According to official statistics, 873 people were found to be infected with the influenza virus, most of which came from the western region of the country.

The Bolivian government has not declared this strain of avian influenza or swine flu - meaning the first source of infection is from poultry or pigs.

In 2009, the H1N1 epidemic broke out in Mexico and spread into a pandemic around the world, killing 17,000 people.

The outbreak in Bolivia is now attacking young children, the elderly, people who are sick or chronic diseases, such as high blood pressure or diabetes.
