Hackers spread malicious code to attack Winamp

The popularly used multimedia application Winamp is now becoming a target for hackers. Malware attacks a deadly security hole in this application that has been hacked by hackers.

The security vulnerability being exploited is an error in Winamp's standard MP4 file decoding feature. This error can be exploited to add more malicious code into the system that makes a mistake.

The error only exists on Winamp version 5.34.

" To succeed hackers have to find a system with Winamp installation errors and are designated as the default application to run MP4 files. But usually Winamp does not automatically open MP4 files embedded in websites ," Computer Center SANS Research Institute said.

Users can only be attacked if they open a malicious MP4 file sent to them by hackers.

Security experts recommend that users should remove the specified Winamp as the default application to run MP4 files and wait for a patch from the product vendor.
