Hair dyeing may increase the risk of breast cancer
Women need to be cautious before dyeing their hair or using hormonal contraceptives because they can increase the risk of breast cancer.
Researcher Sanna Heikkinen from the University of Helsinki in Finland and the Finnish Cancer Registry evaluated the role of using hormonal contraceptives and hair dyes on breast cancer risk factors.
Women need to be cautious before dyeing their hair because it can increase the risk of breast cancer.
"The biggest risk factor for breast cancer is advanced age, lifestyle-related factors including late birth, heavy use of alcohol and passive lifestyle," he said.
The researchers analyzed survey data from 8,000 breast cancer patients and 20,000 control patients in Finland.
The results indicated that the use of hormonal contraceptives was associated with 32% higher risk of breast cancer in women under 50 than those who did not.
The team also investigated the number of mammograms, thought to be very popular.
More than 60% of respondents said they had been screened before age of mammograms (50 years old).
Researchers note that women should be more widely informed about the harmful effects of mammography such as radiation accumulation and potential consequences of positive or false negative.
