Experts warn a snail can lay up to 400 eggs at a time. Exotic snails of up to 15cm in length can even resist pests of farmers.

Dr Ian Bedford, head of the entomology department at the John Innes Center in Norwich, said: "With a mild winter climate and good weather conditions in the spring, snails have ideal conditions to I have seen them appear in dozens of gardens ".

Snails not only eat other animals but also eat their own flesh. They are thought to have appeared in the UK in imported vegetables such as lettuce and lettuce.

Experts warn that snails are gradually adapting to British conditions and mating with native snails to create a mutant that is resistant to all kinds of pesticides.
