Head graft doctor is confident in the success of the surgery

Valery Spiridonov, 30, the first person in the world to volunteer to join a head-to-head transplant experiment to the United States on June 13 to see a surgeon and convince medical professionals.

He is currently a computer scientist and works for an information technology firm. Valery has inherited muscular atrophy and the disease has worsened over time. The infected person usually does not live for more than 20 years.

Valery and Italian doctor Sergio Canavero attended a medical conference held in Annapolis, capital of Maryland state.

"The chance of success is 90%," Reuters quoted Dr. Canavero. "Of course, risks cannot be avoided."

"Medicines do not work with Valery, " Canavero said. This is the first time two people met, before that, they often contacted by phone. The Italian surgeon prepared for the transplant , which is expected to take place over the next two years, with a budget of up to $ 15 million.

The patient's brain is cooled to 10-15 degrees Celsius to prolong the life of the cell in the absence of oxygen. After that, Canavero used a scalpel to cut through the spinal cord and used a special bio-glue to connect the head to the new body. After surgery, Valery will be in a coma state for 3-4 weeks and immunosuppressed.

Earlier, Dr. Canavero believed that within a year, the first transplant recipient could speak and walk normally. And Valery said that the first implant not only helped him prolong life, but could also contribute to scientific research, no matter what the outcome.
