How to determine simple directions by sun and experience

If you ask which direction the sun rises, many will easily answer: "The sun rises in the east and sets in the west" , but to determine which direction is east, which direction is west everyone must know. There are many ways to determine the direction but determining the direction of the sun is the simplest method. You can find the East, West, South and North directions easily.

Method 1: See the direction of sunrise - diving

From an early age, surely we all know a lesson on how to determine the direction:

  1. Morning: The sun rises in the east.
  2. Afternoon: The sun sets in the west.

In fact, this is not entirely accurate. The sun's dive and dive position in the year is not fixed but changes periodically: Xuan Phap, Ha Chi, Thu Phan, Dong Chi and the sun only grows and sets right in the East and West in Spring Stool and Autumn Stool only. .

  1. Summer Days (21/22/06) the sun rises in the Northeast and dives in the Northwest.
  2. The days of Dong Chi (December 21-22), the Sun rises in the Southeast and dives in the Southwest.

Method 2: Determine the direction with "Sticks and Sun " (Owen Doff Method)

Owen Doff is an English pilot who, throughout his life, traveled all over the world and found a way to determine the direction.

He tried more than 1,000 times from all over, and gave approximate results with just one stick in the sun. To commemorate his gratitude, this method was called by his name, Oweb Doff.

How to do the following:

  1. Plug a stick to the ground when it is sunny, perpendicular to the ground, the initial shadow of the stick is T.
  2. Wait about 15 minutes later, the ball will be different. The ball of the club will now be set to D.
  3. Connecting the two points T and D again, we will have a straight line pointing east and west, T head in the west, and head D pointing east. Determining the East / West direction, it is easy to determine the North / South direction.

Method 3: Determine the direction by the clock with the hour hand

Place the watch on a flat, horizontal ground and rotate the dial so that the short needle A (the hour hand) coincides with the outside ball. Draw the OI bisector of AOB (B is number 12 and O is clockwise).

  1. If it is in the morning, the dividing line OI will determine the South direction (clockwise).
  2. If it is in the afternoon, the dividing line OI will determine the north direction (in counterclockwise direction).

Note: If you are a Southern hemisphere, you will calculate the opposite.

The principle of this method is based on the phenomenon of sunrise and sunset for the Earth , forming a circle around the Earth, for 24 hours. The clock's clock hour turns a circle for 12 hours, which means that at the same time, the bow watch is twice as large.

In the opposite way, if we take the North-South direction of dividing the bow of the hour hand drawn by the clock (with the position of the clock face as we did above), we will find the direction of the Sun appearing.

With this method is not very accurate, errors can reach dozens of degrees. The main reason is because the clock face is placed parallel to the horizon plane, and the Sun's daily moving path at the extreme is just on the horizontal plane. At other latitudes, that line creates a different angle of the horizon, which can be greater than 90 degrees (in the Equator). Therefore, only in the near-polar region can this method be used to determine the direction for accurate results!

In addition to determining the direction of the Sun, people also determine the direction of the wind and other experiences.

* Determine the direction of the wind:

Vietnam we are located in the 'Asian monsoon' region with two main types of wind. Northeast monsoon and Southwest monsoon. Northeast monsoon wind lasts from October this year until April next year, blowing from Northeast to Southwest. Southwest monsoon winds last from May to October every year, blowing from Southwest to Northeast.

  1. Want to know which direction the wind blows, you look at the tops of trees, grass, flags .
  2. Hold less dust, scrap paper . drop down to see which wind goes away.
  3. Wipe a finger, hold it in your mouth for about 10 seconds, remove it from the air, if the cold finger is blowing from that side.

* Identify empirical direction:

  1. Meeting bad weather, not seeing the sun, moon, stars . and without a compass, you can plan the direction by looking at the trunk. The most humid side is the North because the sun does not go through this direction. From there you deduce other directions.
  2. Select trees and long-term architecture to see, the trunk of the tree is thick, dark-colored, it is north. The architecture works in which direction grows moss, dark, wet, it is north.
  3. When meeting a tree root that is sawed horizontally, looking at the age ring in that saw, which direction has the thicker age of the ken is the north.
  4. When entering the forest, meet the tree with ant and ant nest in the south.
  5. If the church is independent, the church's main door always turns west.
