How to determine the direction by the Moon

If you get lost in the dark, the position of the Moon in the sky can help us determine the direction.

Since the Moon is also on Hoang Doi Street, it seems that it also grows in the East and dives in the West like the Sun. But the Moon is different from the Sun: when it is round, it is missing, so determining the orientation is a bit different.

Our people have the sentence:

Early moon moon in East.
The end of the moonless moon in the West.

Or simply remember:

Early in the western month white.
End of the West Black month.
(West here is West)

That is, we base on the days before the full moon of the lunar calendar (from the 1st lunar month to the 14th day of the lunar calendar), the missing part of the moon will point to the east.

Picture 1 of How to determine the direction by the Moon
In the days before the Lunar full moon, the vacant part of the moon will point to the East.

Full moon day, all night watching the bright moonlight shining in the sky. We can use "Owen Doff Method" to determine the direction also.

And about the days after the lunar full moon (from the 17th to the 30th), the vacant part of the moon will point to the West.

Determine the direction with special and geographic features

If there is no compass, no sunlight and no Moon . then we have to use some classic methods of some people going to the forest. Although the level of accuracy is not high, it also partly helps the lost people feel secure and calmly find their way back.

First of all, if there is a map in hand, we can use special signs and objects. For example: a bridge, a national highway . that we already know its direction and position on the map. It is possible to determine the location where we stand, on that basis, to distinguish different directions.

  1. Sunflowers always face east, so it is called Sunflower (towards the Rising Sun).
  2. The distinctive shapes of tall trees in the dense forest always tend toward the rising Sun to catch the sun.
  3. In the tropics - Equatorial, moss (or lichen growing symbiotic) grows on the tree trunk in the West a lot.In temperate regions, moss will grow north.
  4. Trees and shrubs are independent, in the months with northeast wind (cold wind), when there are many birds flying from any direction, under the tree there are many birds in the southwest direction.
  5. The core of the big tree trunk (trunk if cut off) will point north.
  6. Based on the flight direction of the bird: In the winter, it will fly towards the South to migrate, and in the summer, it will fly towards the North (only pay attention to the high flying birds).
  7. Bamboo shoots and bananas often grow in the east before being bigger, the other directions grow younger.
  8. Ants: cover many northern leaves (including ant nests on trees and underground. Except for low places, no rain, little wind).
  9. The hole of the honeycomb and the perforated bird on the nesting tree are usually southeast.
