IBM developed pharmaceutical origin test technology

On December 15, IBM announced that it had developed a technology that could help drug manufacturers, distributors and retailers prevent certain types of counterfeit drugs. This is a radio frequency identification (RFID) device that can confirm products are authentic.

The product packaging will be fitted with a small broadcast antenna that has separate identifiers and is collected by the computer at transit points in the distribution channel. This makes it easier to determine the origin of the shipment as well as to update the inventory information.

There are many major pharmaceutical manufacturers working with IBM on this technology such as GlaxoSmithKline, AmerisourceBergen, Cardinal Health .
