Installing a shark warning system in Binh Dinh

Binh Dinh Provincial Department of Aquatic Resources Protection and Protection has successfully installed and tested the warning gear system, preventing sharks from attacking people in coastal waters of Quy Nhon City.

Ms. Mai Thi Kim Thi, Head of Binh Dinh Department of Aquatic Resources, said that this testing system has 3 groups of fishing gear, each 400 meters long and 200 meters grid and 10 alternating single sentences equipped buoys, signal lights for swimmers to recognize. Installation system from the seaside area of Royal Hotel to Children's Park, Quy Nhon City. This is the area where people often swim and each shark appears to attack people.

According to statistics of Binh Dinh province, from 2009 to 2011, at Quy Nhon sea area, there were at least 10 sharks and shark shark attacks. In 2010, the Ministry of Science and Technology assigned Nha Trang Institute of Oceanography to study the topic 'Design and test of gears to prevent shark (shark) in Binh Dinh sea' . This topic offers solutions to use 3 grid-fishing systems to prevent sharks from attacking people.

Associate Professor, Dr. Vo Si Tuan, Deputy Director of Nha Trang Institute of Oceanography, Chairman of the project said that it is expected that the end of April will be accepted by the Ministry of Science and Technology and officially implemented. .

Mr. Tuan analyzed and betrayed people in Quy Nhon sea area due to the combination of many factors such as Quy Nhon bay with deep sea currents; The development of many types of fish scrub, lobster scrub, net cage (Thai ball), artificial reef . close to the beach has created conditions for the environment, prey for sharks to near the shore to live. The period of time when sharks are constantly attacking people coincides with the time of El Nino. Maybe the weather has changed the behavior of sharks, making them more aggressive.

The team has also come up with a number of solutions to increase the ability to prevent sharks from attacking the swimmers in the short term. Focusing on communication solutions to raise community awareness; reduce the number of rubbing fish, rub shrimp, net cage . too close to shore.

There are about 23 fierce fish species likely to appear in Quy Nhon sea. Among them, three species may have attacked swimmers including: white striped sharks, big eye sharks, deep sharks.

Along with studying the fishing-net system, scientists of Nha Trang Institute of Oceanography also recommend some solutions for people to avoid shark attacks, such as: not bathing in the early morning or evening , avoid bathing in turbid waters, people with bleeding wounds should not bathe, wear costumes or wear sparkling jewelry, do not swim near small fish, do not swim near the anchorage area of boats .

Experts said that in Vietnam today, many seas have no sharks. This is also a common situation in the world. Therefore, shark conservation is the goal of many international organizations so that this species is not extinct. In many parts of the world, sharks are used as a resource to develop marine tourism. The problem is how to exploit sharks for tourism development and not for people. To exploit sharks for socio-economic development, people must understand them. Meanwhile, in Vietnam, there has not been any research topic on this issue.

Initial comments of researchers from Nha Trang Institute of Oceanography, Quy Nhon Bay, Quy Nhon City, Binh Dinh are diverse species of intershark shark (11 species), great white sharks and sharks. white stripes. Particularly white striped sharks, the time spent near the coast of Quy Nhon is recorded as a population of many different sizes and also pregnant fish.
