Intel's new generation chip is called Core i7
The high-end processor for this desktop is Intel's first chip built on the new microarchitecture, which is equipped with four cores on the same silicon plate.
This is AMD's long-running approach to Phenom and Opteron models - something that experts appreciate because Intel's dual-core and quad-core chips simply "pair two cores into one package in the same way people I try to stuff my legs into a pair of pants. "
Once known as the code name Nehalem, Core i7 will be available in the fourth quarter of 2008, promising to speed up communication between chips as well as more efficient multitasking. The most advanced i7 series Extreme Edition will have its own black logo.
"Core will be a crossover brand for our computer processors , " said Sean Maloney, Intel's executive vice president.
The server and laptop versions will be released after the i7 desktop is available.
