Cougars are often called Florida newspapers, they have very interesting physical characteristics. This cat has a face like a small lion but has a short tail like a rabbit's tail. Here are the surprises and interesting things about this leopard.

Classification has problems

In the past, Florida newspapers were considered a separate subspecies, one of 32 recognized subspecies. Hunting of these animals was banned in 1958 and in 1967, the US Fish and Wildlife Service listed this subspecies in a threatened group. They were added to the official list of endangered species in 1973.

On the basis of genetic studies, many species of cougars are too similar to be classified into a separate taxonomic group. Therefore, they were recommended to reclassify to Puma concolor cougar , including Florida Newspapers .

Studies published in the third edition of a scientific publication entitled 'Mammals around the world' say that Florida newspapers are not a separate subspecies of cougar. However, it is described as Puma concolor coryi in research works, as well as in works related to this animal protection.

Threats

Florida leopard subspecies has been classified as endangered. The biggest threats to them include its natural enemy, the American crocodile . Also poachers and degradation of habitats have significantly reduced the amount.

Excessive hunting has caused great devastation; The number of Florida newspapers today is just a small, isolated group, in which inbreeding (breeding among closely related individuals) is a frequent phenomenon that causes genetic diseases to occur. Characteristic curled tail, heart defect, weaker immune system, wrong position of the testicle in malignant or infertile males.

Vehicle collisions and conflicts (for territorial protection) are the two biggest causes of death for Florida newspapers. However, the conservation organization of the White Oak saved many orphaned newspapers and brought them back to the natural ecosystem.

South Florida is a rapidly growing area, with lots of roads, separating children from males, making them unable to mate. However, some persistent males often try to cross the road, risking their lives. A large number of cars were stabbed to death by doing so. Another reason for traffic accidents is when the male newspaper searches for territory (to do that, the male must cross long distances, while the female is often close to the mother's territory).
