Internet address system will not last long

Picture 1 of Internet address system will not last long As the creator of the DNS domain name system, millions of people use billions of times every day, Dr. Paul Mockapetris has shown little confidence in the ability of "longevity" for his "children".

Initially, Mockapetris expects DNS to support about 50 million Internet addresses. But this number has expanded to such an extent that it cannot be statistically accurate. A survey in January 2006 showed that the Internet currently has at least 394 million domain names.

Success beyond this expectation is not enough to convince Mockapetris that the Internet naming mechanism will have a stable future: " If you want to live forever with the product, you should pursue the music field or art ".

According to Mockapetris, in some ways, DNS is starting to play a "hidden" role to Internet users. Many popular e-mail programs show nicknames, nicknames or brief addresses, so recipients rarely read the full address that contains the entire domain of managing this e-mail account.

Similarly, many people do not need to type the full domain name to access search engines like Google, type keywords and click on links to navigate to a certain site. " DNS technology is still active but fewer and fewer people approach it directly, " Mockapetris said.

Some plans to change the operating mechanism of Internet domain names are underway such as combining phone numbers worldwide with e-mail addresses in the same system called ENum, or E protocol. 164, to help people contact each other more easily.

Mockapetris is currently the president of the US Nominum - the company responsible for integrating the phone giants' cable and cable networks.
