It is possible to predict premature women

Scientists have discovered a gene variant that can help predict the risk of premature birth of a pregnant woman. The findings also help explain why American and African women are more likely to be born prematurely than Europeans.

Premature babies will experience more health problems, such as difficulty learning, respiratory disorders, vision loss and hearing loss. There are several factors that can predict the risk of preterm birth. However, until now, no cause has been valid. If doctors are warned about the possibility that a pregnant woman will give birth early, they may be able to offer corresponding treatments, minimizing any risk to the child.

Dr. Jerome Strauss, at Virginia Commonwealth University, examined a gene called SERPINH1 - which controls the production of collagen protein, the main component of many body tissues, including cartilage, ligaments, tendons, bones and teeth. He found that this genetic change caused them to produce less collagen.

It may be a key factor in the weakening of the fetal membrane, fragility and leading to premature birth.

"This may be evidence of genetics that can affect birth complications, and genetic factors will make racial differences in preterm birth," Strauss said.

"With a better understanding of gene mutations, we can identify women who are capable of preterm birth and early intervention to prevent that."
