Khanh Hoa: Detecting 110 black-shanked douc langurs

A population of nearly 100 - 110 individuals of black-shanked douc langur - named in the Vietnam Red Book, is endangered and needs protection - found at Hon He peninsula, Ninh Hoa district, Khanh Hoa.

According to Mr. Nguyen Huy Dung, Deputy Director of the Center for Forestry Natural Resources and Environment, Black-shanked Douc Langur (scientific name: Pygathrix nigripes) is mainly concentrated in the areas of Ba Ngoc, Suoi Lanh, Doc Chinh, Doc Rong (Ninh Phu commune), Rung Cat, Ghe Hop (Ninh Phuoc commune) and Suoi Hoa Mai, Hong Hai tourist area (Ninh Van commune).

In Vietnam, this species is not much, each point has about 50-60 fish, dispersed in southern provinces such as Kon Tum, Ninh Thuan . The detection of populations of black-shanked douc langur in Khanh Hoa is beyond price. Conservation also offers a great opportunity for the local tourism industry.

Mr. Dung analyzed: The forest in Hon Hei peninsula is mainly secondary forest, the area of ​​primary forest is very small. The cutting of wood burning coal, lowering forest trees, digging fish and shrimps, making roads, hunting . is a big threat to the survival of the population of black-shanked douc langur. Without timely and effective protection measures, the number of these precious langurs will decline across the country and be at risk of extinction. Meanwhile, Hon He Peninsula is located in the tourist area, if combining conservation and development of ecotourism, it will bring great benefits to the community.
