In addition, landslides also put dozens of villages in Nepal and India at risk of flash floods.

The number of people killed may increase because many houses are buried in mud or submerged. The Bihar state government ordered a high alert and evacuated people living downstream near the Kosi River to safety.

Nepalese troops have been mobilized to rescue and overcome the consequences of landslides.

Disaster occurred when a hill suddenly collapsed buried 100 houses before pouring mud and rock into the Sunkoshi River, about 75km northeast of Kathmandu. The river was clogged by a landslide that created a large lake, estimated to be 2.5km long and 130m deep.

The cause of landslide is attributed to the high water level on the Kosi River in the Indian state of Bihar causing floods.
