Recently, many households in Chanh 1 Hamlet, Tan Xuan Commune, Hoc Mon District, Ho Chi Minh City, are living in a state of fear because leeches can attack them at any time. The reason is that people believe that a middlemen buy leeches to sell to China at high prices. But then this bullhead left and left the leeches.
Scientists said that this situation was warned for a long time but the people did not listen to each other to follow the movement with the immediate benefit.
"The growth and development speed of leeches is very fast. No matter what happens if they grow normally. But if they are raised and uncontrolled, they will grow massively, attacking blood-sucking species. Another student in the same environment , ' said Dr. Bui Quang Te, a seafood expert.
Te also said that like anopheles mosquitoes, leeches are also intermediate animals. When parasites in humans or animals have diseases, they will transmit germs to humans or animals when sucking blood.
Concluding this view, Professor Dang Huy Huynh, chairman of Vietnam Zoology Association, emphasized that leeches are very easy to breed in all conditions, especially in low-lying areas.
"In natural conditions, leeches will grow at a balanced level, grow and die. But in the case of people raising leeches for sale, the number of leeches grows beyond the tolerance level of the ecosystem. This not only affects the ecosystem but also affects people's lives , " Huynh said.
"If not controlled, the leeches will spill into the environment, becoming a disaster, like the phenomenon of raising yellow snails and red-eared turtles , " Huynh warned.
Regarding the method to kill leeches, Professor Huynh said that this is a difficult job."Even if you burn, if you don't burn a few cells, you have favorable conditions, it can grow into a normal leech ," Professor Huynh noted.
According to Dr. Bui Quang Te, to destroy leeches, people can catch directly or use chemicals.
"Using chemicals can affect the aquatic environment, so it is best to catch them and then dig a hole and then sprinkle it with lime , " Dr. Qi said.
Some other experts said that after a while leeches will stop growing. But to destroy leeches immediately need to soak the alcohol and then burn the leeches to die completely, and methods such as tightening make the leeches reproduce faster.
