Leonis Minorid asteroid approaching Earth
A Leonis Minorid meteor exploded over Puerto Rico.
The meteorite glows blue.
Early on the morning of December 6 (local time), a meteor streaked across the sky over Puerto Rico, a spectacular sight captured by Frankie Lucena in Cabo Rojo. In Lucena's video, the Leonis Minorid meteor glowed green, then exploded, leaving a bright trail of debris that lasted for several seconds in the sky.
The Caribbean Astronomical Society confirmed that several meteors were observed in the early hours of the same day. Among them were meteors belonging to the Sigma Hydrids group and a striking green streak from the Leonis Minorid meteor. According to the society, this streak lasted for nearly a minute, attracting the attention of astronomical observers.
The meteorite phenomenon is part of a series of remarkable astronomical events in December, when the Earth passes through streams of meteor dust left behind by ancient comets. Experts say this is a rare opportunity to admire the natural beauty of the universe.
