Lightning strikes form a 4.6m wide pit in the middle of the parking lot

A powerful lightning strike in a thunderstorm on October 30 hit the parking lot in Fort Worth, Texas, puncturing the concrete floor and sending debris away.

The Fort Worth Fire Department said it happened early in the morning near a gas station on Shadydell Drive. The common parking lot of the gas station and the shopping center has a pit about 4.6m wide and 0.9m deep, according to Mike Drivdahl, a spokesman for the Fire Department.

Video of lightning recorded by security cameras is posted online. Many people stopped by the parking lot on Wednesday to see for themselves the damage the lightning caused."When I drove over, I was in awe," said Don Thomasson. "Lightning destroys the concrete. It's crazy," Zak Moore said.

Wendy Jimenez was working at a nearby bakery when struck by lightning."It was like a big bang. We looked at each other and wondered what happened," Jimenez recalls.

The lightning caused a 180kg diesel pump to bounce off the ground. Fuel tank located at a depth of about 3m without damage. Experts at the Texas Environmental Quality Commission will work to make sure nothing leaks out. The concrete fragments splattered as far as 20m, and fortunately no one was injured. However, the car park will be closed for some time.
