Lobster escaped death thanks to orange peel

Due to its unique color, the lobster found in a US supermarket is not sold but is given to the aquarium.

An orange lobster is rarely seen by Westborough Roche Bros. supermarket staff. In Massachusetts, USA, discovered in the box, Newsweek reported on June 6."It looks like it's matured," commented supermarket director Josh Naughton.

Only one of the 30 million lobsters is orange, the special color is caused by the genetic variation, according to expert Robert C. Bayer at the lobster research institute in Maine. Sometimes lobsters are blue, but orange is even rarer. Perhaps albino lobster is one of the rarest types. They are translucent white, not even turning red when cooking.

Lobster of unusual color due to excess secretion or lack of a certain protein . "Orange-bearing animals when alive showed a lack of this protein. They showed only carotenoid pigments and light reds," said Jay Bradley, managing at the National Aquarium.

Orange lobsters are safe to eat but will not be cooked. Naughton asked the supermarket staff not to sell when it was discovered. Outstanding appearance may not be useful when living in the wild but helps it keep the network.

Supermarket decided to give orange lobster to New England Aquarium. They will display or send animals to another aquarium in Japan. This shrimp can be 7 - 9 years old. It is fortunate to live so long with bright colors that easily catch the predators in the North Atlantic, New England Aquarium commented.
