That is the conclusion from a report of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Agency for Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (USA).

Accordingly, for every 3 people with mental illness, there is 1 smoker; meanwhile, 5 people do not have mental illness, there is 1 smoker.

When comparing the ratio of 1/3 and 1/5, the research team estimated that the smoking risk of mental illness is 70% higher than that of people without mental illness.

Many mental illnesses are at higher risk of premature death because of tobacco than death from their disease, the New York Times quoted Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, CDC director.

The report is based on information from a national health and drug use survey, conducted from 2009 to 2011. The surveyed population is 138,000 adults.

They were asked 14 questions to show their psychological and disease status. They will be judged to have mental illness if their reaction indicates that they have behavioral, emotional and mental disorders within the previous 12 months.

People who reported smoking a cigarette or smoking a cigarette within the previous 30 days were considered smokers.

Research suggests that tobacco can reduce the effect of mental illness medication.
