A group of archaeologists from the Mexican Institute of Anthropology (INAH) has found a pink, 3.5-meter-tall monolithic stone monument, Tlaloc Rain God, dating back over 500 years. This is considered the most important archaeological discovery in Mexico in the past 30 years.
(Photo: telecinco.es) Archaeological experts said the statue was discovered when the INAH research group expanded the excavation around the Big Temple, in the old town of Zocalo in central Mexico City. The statue has many elaborate embossed patterns in the upper part, concave bottom and has many characteristic sculptural features of the period 1502-1521, the period of Aboriginal peoples in Mexico has gradually been conquered by Spain. .
In the same area, INAH also discovered an altar carved into a stone wall with two pillars, next to the statue of God Tlaloc (32x34 cm) and Shennong (30x37 cm), crafted in the period 1440- 1470. Experts say this is a "unique work" because all the pre-colonial altars found in Mexico are now on the ground.
On the same day, the leader of the Mexico City capital authorities visited, encouraged the archaeological group and expressed a commitment to provide financial support to INAH to complete the study on these breakthrough findings. It is expected that the Big Temple will be open to visitors at the beginning of next year.
