The National Institute of Polar Research of Japan in Tatikawa (suburb of Tokyo) has introduced a model of a mobile home designed for Antarctic explorers and in the future can be used. as a residence for people at the moon research stations.
This is a joint project of the research institute with Misawa and the Japan Aerospace Research Agency JAXA.
According to information from the press department of the institute, the house has a container-type structure of blocks of about 3m x 6m, resistant to strong winds and severe cold. The blocks move with the help of a sled, which installs a home for polar explorers and astronauts.
A house of 2 blocks will have an area of about 33m². The walls are made of wood and Galvalume coating, resistant to temperatures of -45.3 ° C and wind speed of 220.32 km / h. Solar photovoltaic panels allow the storage of energy and heat to maintain the optimum appropriate temperature inside the home.
The testing of the house will take place between February and September 2020 at Japan's Showa station in Antarctica, where the unique house was brought by the icebreaker Shirase from Tokyo port.
Testing in the polar region is an opportunity for researchers to test the function as well as problems arising of the house. After that, the house will be tested at Dome Research Station , which has similar living conditions in space.
