More than 40 people were killed in Nepal earthquake

Nepalese Prime Minister Sushil Koirala urged people to "be brave and patient", while the number of deaths caused by the earthquake yesterday in the country increased to more than 40 people.

Koirala was criticized by earthquake survivors at the end of last month because the government could not cope with the disaster.

Casualties in the earthquake yesterday are growing rapidly. According to official figures from the Nepal Emergency Operations Center, 37 people died and 1,129 were injured. Reuters quoted authorities as saying there were five Indians living in states bordering Nepal and one person in Tibet died.

Dolakha and Sindhupalchowk districts, the two regions heavily impacted by the earthquake last month, continued to be devastated, AFP reported."Many houses in Dolakha collapsed and there is a possibility that the number of deaths here will increase ", Nepalese Interior Minister Bam Dev Gautam said.

The Red Cross received information of large-scale casualties in the town of Chautara, Sindhupalchowk, where the Norwegian branch of the organization is setting up a field hospital.

" Hundreds of people are coming here. They (doctors) treat dozens of injured people and have performed more than 10 surgeries," said Nichola Jones, Red Cross spokesman.

Patrick Fuller, Red Cross spokesman, said landslides appeared in Tatopani area, near the border with China.

According to Save the Children, two large buildings in the Balaju Nayabaza area in Kathmandu have collapsed and many large cracks appear on other high-rise buildings.

The magnitude 7.3 earthquake yesterday occurred in the context of Nepal being severely devastated by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake on April 25. The previous disaster destroyed more than 300,000 homes, killing more than 8,000 people and affecting 8.1 million people, or more than a quarter of Nepal's population.
