Mummy woman froze 200 years

Due to the cold climate, the female body from the mid-19th century accidentally became a mummy, a part of clothing is preserved.

Dr. Elena Solovyova at the Russian Academy of Sciences found a female mummy buried in the sand in Yakutia, Siberia, Russia, where temperatures could drop below - 60 degrees Celsius, Sun reported on October 29. "Her soft tissues are well preserved. This is a natural mummification process, " Solovyova said.

The new discovery led scientists to revise the theory that this place is the graveyard of the Lensky Ostrog settlement . Formed in 1632, Lensky Ostrog was the first Russian settlement in Siberia. However, the above graveyard is likely to appear later, around the mid-1800s.

The team identified a Yakut woman, not a Russian. The woman wore a small cross on her chest. Some of her clothes are manufactured by machine.

"Perhaps she was buried in the winter and froze. The clothes below are still intact with fur underwear, a traditional Yakut costume. She also wears leather stockings. horse, inside there is a coat, " Solovyova said. The woman also wears torbasa, a traditional Yakut soft boot, made from horse or cow leather, inside is also lined with fur.

Scientists wanted to separate the skull for more thorough research. However, after careful consideration, they decided not to do it for ethical reasons."These are mummies, not just fragments of bones. I can't separate her head and body , " Solovyova said.

Scientists have discovered many intact human and animal remains in the permafrost in Siberia for hundreds, even thousands of years. Most of this area is cold year round, creating an ideal environment for natural mummification. Earlier this month, researchers found two small lions died 26,000 years ago and 44,000 years ago in Siberia. One of them starved to death while the other was hit by a falling stone. Most likely they were all abandoned by their mother.
