The sword weighs 1.2 kg, is 97 cm long and rolled 17 cm wide. According to the British Museum, the blade was certainly made in Germany in the 13th or early 14th century, but the sword itself originated in England . They described the " sword as part of the ritual of the knights, and the cross-shaped hilt confirmed the Christian obligations that a knight must accomplish to protect the church."

But what attracted the most attention was the mysterious inscription on the blade: + NDXOXCHWDRGHDXORVI +.

Archaeologist Marc van Hasselt of Utrecht University speculates that the words written in Latin and ND may be short for " Nostrum Dominus" (our Lord) or " Nomine Domini" (the name of the Lord), and XOX aimed at the Trinity.

The British Museum rejected the sword theory that originated from Vikings . " Based on the sword tendon, the knob at the hilt and the shape of the inscription, there is an opinion that the sword belongs to the Vikings, but clearly the same characteristics are more like the medieval European swords," museum representative said.
