Mysterious world deepest river

The Congo River flows through 10 countries, "carrying" 40 hydropower plants and pouring through the world's second largest forest.

Congo River - the deepest river in the world

Huge amount of water

The Congo River was once called the Zaire River from 1971 - 1997, later named after the Republic of Congo in Central Africa. The river is 4,700 km long, is one of the world's largest river basin and water flow. Every second there are more than 35,000 cubic meters of water pouring into the Atlantic, equivalent to the amount of water of more than 13 Olympic standard swimming pools. The river is so deep that there is no exact measurement. This is a river with the largest hydroelectric potential in Africa. Scientists calculate that the entire Congo River basin accounts for 30% of the world's hydropower potential. This potential can provide enough electricity for all sub-Saharan regions.

There are 2 Congo rivers

The upper reaches of the river are 4,023km long, constituting one of the world's lazyest rivers , soft flowing through Central Africa. The flow of the river is very stable. Due to the long river, there is always a year-round rainy season in any area along the river basin. The river flows through a total of 10 countries. Congo also flows through a huge tropical forest, the largest forest in Africa and the second largest in the world after the Amazon.

2 capitals are close together

Until half a million years ago, the Congo River poured into a large lake 362km from the ocean. On the banks of the river are the capital Kinshasa and Brazzaville of the two countries divided by the river. These are the two closest capitals in the world, excluding Rome and the Vatican. From this section, the Congo River flows at a very fast speed toward the sea.

There are no plains

Most of the world's rivers create fertile delta plains. However, the Congo River flows into the Atlantic Ocean through a narrow channel, with depths of more than 228m. This river is also known for a 120km canyon called 'The door of hell'. It is difficult to guess the most difficult rapids that even the most skilled rowers can move. The flow of the river also creates spectacular falls. Along the river there are 40 hydroelectric plants operating, of which the largest is the Inga hydroelectric dam.

The river has an extremely unique ecosystem.

Rapid flow can speed up evolution

Biologists like the lower Congo River. This is the first place they find communities that are divided not by mountains or oceans, but by river flows. In this section, the river is less than 1.6 km wide, with completely new fish species growing. This is where there are more unique creatures than anywhere on earth.
