The name is intended to show honor to the US President after he decided to expand the Papahānaumokuākea National Marine Reserve , northwest of the Hawaiian Islands.

"We named so to acknowledge his efforts to protect and preserve nature, including the expansion of Papahānaumokuākea," said Richard Pyle, a scientist at the Bishop's Museum, the lead author. , said.

Members of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) discovered Tosanides obama fish in Papahānaumokuākea. The small fish is pink and yellow, the male on the dorsal fin has a blue border with red and yellow stripes in the center.

"This circle reminds of President Obama's campaign campaign before. It's very suitable for a fish named in honor of the President," Pyle said.

According to Randall Kosaki, a scientist at NOAA, this fish is even more special because it is endemic to Papahānaumokuākea, ie it will not appear elsewhere in the world.
