New giant galaxy discovered hidden in the 'blind zone' of the Milky Way

Astronomers have just found a

Astronomers have discovered a giant 'extragalactic structure' hidden behind the Milky Way. It appears to be a giant cluster of galaxies , filling in this mysterious area on our cosmic map, known as the 'zone of avoidance.' Until now, no one knew what existed in this region that covers 10 to 20 percent of the universe.

The study explains that this mysterious region does not allow for clear optical observations of extragalactic sources, behind the Milky Way. The reason for this, it explains, is due to "the extinction of the optical emission of these objects ".

The scientists in the new study decided to make their observations using near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. They say the NIR could be a source of astronomical discoveries, including the discovery of new galaxies. Success with the NIR could help complete the picture of massive structures in this still 'little-explored' region of space .

The new galaxy cluster, named VVVGCl-B J181435-381432 , lies behind the Milky Way's bulge, helping to complete " the picture of large-scale structure in this still little-explored region of the sky ."

The team identified the new cluster in the mysterious region using the VISTA telescope in Paranal, Chile. Scientists used the term Great Attractor to refer to an unknown gravitational anomaly that pulls galaxies and galaxy clusters toward it, present in the ZOA and hidden galaxy clusters. They also explained that due to the high stellar density and the line of sight caused by dust, detecting galaxies behind the galactic plane is a challenge.

The mysterious region , which previously held a suspected galaxy, now has a clearer view. Researchers say they are also bracing for surprises from further discoveries in this still-unknown region.
