Telecom KDDI, and the Japan Information and Telecommunications Research Institute, recently announced that the world's fastest speed optical fiber product has been successfully researched.

KDDI said its fiber optic products have data transfer speeds 10 times faster than current technology at 30 Terabits / S. In other words, you can download 720 DVDs (2 hours / DVD duration) in just 1 second.

The team said they could transmit data at a distance of 240km. KDDI's goal is to bring this new product to commercialization in 2010, and proceed to replace all new technical fiber optic cables for major cities in Japan. Expected cost for this new product is about 210 million USD.
