PayPal and eBay tops the list
Users of two websites eBay and PayPal are the target of more than 75% of phishing email phishing, security vendor Sophos warned.
Often, phishing emails always lead the victim to a fake website that looks exactly like PayPal or eBay. Their purpose is never changed: Find ways to steal user information and passwords.
Sophos has been testing all of the phishing emails sent in 2006. The results were startling: 54.3% tried to steal PayPal users' information, while the rate on eBay was 20. , 9%.
It's easy to understand why PayPal and eBay are the top targets of phisher. PayPal is the world's leading online payment tool, while eBay is a huge "market."
On eBay, users are always exposed to confidential information, more than when they access other bank, credit or financial websites.
The irony is that both PayPal and eBay are members of the Anti-Phishing Force, an organization set up to erase online fraud. The organization has published many documentation on how to detect phishing emails.
But it seems that PayPal and eBay have become victims of their popularity. "Phisher likes PayPal and eBay because both sites are well known, used and visited," said Sophos analyst Graham Cluley. " Banks are also suffering from phishing attacks, but they cannot reach widespread reach like PayPal and eBay ."
E-commerce businesses have made great efforts in propagating and protecting customers from fraudulent forms of attacks, but the best solution is that users must protect their own information. " Always think before every click, " Cluley recommends.
