However, according to Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), the amount of radiation leaked is negligible and has not affected the area outside the factory. Sepa is continuing to investigate the incident.
The leak occurs when the reactor of the DSRL plant and equipment is in the process of removing some of the radioactivity contained in the waste water. Under DSRL, there is no risk of human being exposed to radiation from this incident.
There are currently more than 100 tons of fuel used for nuclear reactors stored at DSRL.
Dounreay was built in 1950 as an experimental nuclear power complex with a total budget of £ 2.4 billion but has been inactive since 1994. The project is currently in the process of demolition.
