Rare 'purple coral' mushrooms are found in northern Wales
A rare "purple coral" mushroom, only a few days a year, was discovered by conservationist Dr. Trevor Dines on the Llyn Peninsula in Gwynedd, North Wales.
This is one of the rarest forms of mushrooms in England and up to 4 inches tall.It is rare because in fact it only lasts a few days to a week.
Dr. Dines claims this is the first time he has seen one in a decade.
"They're really colorful so they're great for making people care about mushrooms , " he said.
The fungus, scientifically known as Clavaria zollingeri, grows in grass spots near hardwood trees.
Dr. Trevor Dines said he discovered the fungus when he walked outside on the Llyn Peninsula and this was the first time he had seen one in ten years. He said: 'This is the best time of the year to search but you never know exactly where or when.'
'In addition, they only last a few days - at most a week. But that just adds to the fun of mushroom hunting. '
Scientists say the warm summers and the sudden drop in temperatures have created good conditions for the fungus to grow. Dr Dines said: 'We are feeling quite excited right now because we are having such a good year.'
Measures have been applied in areas such as the New Forest to protect mushrooms from professional predators, while other areas are designated as Special Scientific Places of Interest (SSSI).
Conservation charity Plantlife has launched a new project to raise awareness of grasslands and pastures.
