Red-haired people suffer less pain than dark-haired people

When undergoing surgery, red-haired people need anesthesia or take pain medicine at a higher dose than those with dark hair, according to research by British experts.

Experts at Southampton University Hospital (UK) conducted a study to determine if white people, red hair had unusual reactions to pain compared to those with darker hair.

Previous US studies, respectively in 2002 and 2009, concluded that red-haired people need to be given high-dose anesthesia when undergoing surgery, according to the Telegraph.

Another study in Denmark also found that red-haired people are more cold-tolerant than dark-haired people, but can still eat hot food as well as others.

Experts say that the gene that regulates red hair is also involved in the production of endorphin, a natural pain reliever in the body.

Accordingly, mutations in the MC1R gene will cause red hair, but also make the subject more sensitive to pain.

It is very important to determine the level of pain in the patient when surgery is needed, so that anesthesia specialist injects a sufficient amount, not excess anesthesia to avoid possible complications.
