Although the last flood in Russia's Far East region caused billions of dollars in damage, it also brought many benefits and a positive impact on the entire Amur River basin ecosystem.

The statement was made by Deputy Director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of the Khabarovsk region of Russian Federation Victor Bardyuk at a press conference on August 26 in Khabarovsk.

According to Bardyuk, flood water is rich in silt good for agriculture. Water mixed with peat significantly reduces the risk of fire threatening 100,000 hectares of precious timber trees every year in the Khabarovsk region in the summer. In addition, rising river water also enriches fish reserves on the Amur River, river water overflows and replenishes food sources for bird gardens in the surrounding wetlands.

However, after the flood, the environmental experts must strengthen the monitoring of water quality in the rivers. Currently the Amur River meets the long-term average. There are some concerns about the heavy metal ratio in the country but still within the permitted level.

In the past historic flood, Amur is the most severely affected province. Amur River water on August 23 has risen to 716cm, the highest since the historic flood in 1987.
