Samsung has released a 1.8-inch 60-GB drive
On January 25, Samsung unveiled its first 1.8-inch drive with a 60GB capacity - a product in its line of N-series hard drives.
Ultra-slim with 5mm height, Samsung's N series has capacities of 20, 30, 40 and 60 GB with both internal and external hard drives. With the release of this high-capacity ultra-thin drive, Samsung hopes its products will soon be widely used in portable and mobile devices worldwide.
Despite the early announcement of the new hard drive in early 2007, Samsung was not the first company to introduce a high-capacity ultra-thin hard drive. Earlier this month, Seagate also released the Lyrion drive with the same size of 1.8 inches and a capacity of 60 GB.
According to Samsung, the new N series drives are currently the quietest device on the market, with measured sound intensity at 1.8 Bel (equivalent to 18 decibels). The current minimum listening threshold of a person with good hearing is only 2 Bel. And although there is no official information about a partnership between Samsung and Sony, there is a rumor that Samsung's new 60GB capacity drive will be used in Sony's new PSP model.
