Save over VND 500 million in Earth Hour

In 60 minutes of turning off the lights of Earth Hour 2013 campaign, the power system's capacity was reduced by 401MW, electricity savings were equivalent to VND 576 million.

The main event of Earth Hour 2013 took place in August Revolution Square, in front of Hanoi Opera House from 20:30 on March 23. Thousands of people in the cities of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Hoi An . turn off the lights to respond to Earth Hour.

According to statistics from the National Electricity Regulatory Center, within 1 hour of turning off the lights of the Earth Hour 2013 campaign, the power system's capacity was reduced by 401MW, the energy savings were 401,000kWh, corresponding to 576 million dong. Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) said that Earth Hour not only contributes to saving a part of electricity consumption but also enhances people's awareness of economical and efficient use of energy, aiming at sustainable socio-economic development and environmental protection.

Earth Hour is a global campaign initiated by the International Fund for Nature Protection (WWF). This initiative calls on individuals and businesses all over the world to turn off the power for an hour on the last Saturday night of March every year. This is the fifth time, Vietnam participated in Earth Hour campaign. Since this year the event takes place simultaneously on the Saturday before the last week of March every year instead of the last Saturday as before.

In 2009, for the first time participating in Earth Hour, Vietnam saved 140,000kWh; in 2010 save 500,000kWh; saving 400,000kWh in 2011; in 2012 saved 546,000kWh.

The organizing committee estimates that this year's Earth Hour campaign will save more than 1 billion dong, up from 712 million last year.
