Secure card for online commerce
Gemalto NV smart card maker plans to introduce a new technology designed to provide online buyers with a simple way to log in to their account with a smart card device. Plug in any computer.
Gemalto, based in Amsterdam (Netherlands) is currently a major distributor for governments and businesses, but the company also hopes that the new system, called Network Identity Manager, is convenient to use. Applications will attract shoppers.
The device will be launched next week at the RSA conference held in San Francisco, no need for any special software and will work with a standard browser and use the same cryptographic mechanism code like websites. Network Identity Manager also uses a 'token management system' that categorizes what capabilities need to be provided to different web sites and will support Verisign's VIP network identity frame.
Because users must plug a smart card device into a computer before logging into an online bank or an online commerce site, this device will hinder the usual identity theft tricks, including phishing (online fraud) or keylogging (software that monitors keyboard activity), according to Amol Deshmulch, a Gemalto market manager. ' It can create a stronger link with any backend program you try to connect to .'
Sandisk also plans to promote USB products that can simplify key management next week, but Sandisk's products will primarily target businesses.
' We will introduce a product that can centrally manage and protect Sandisk's USB flash drive and be able to protect remote access to businesses '.
Sandisk has launched a USB smart card called mToken but unlike Gemalto's Network Indetity Manager, Sandisk's device uses fast memory to store applications on USB.
