Seoul has snow in mid-April after 20 years

The Korea Meteorological Agency (KMA) on April 10 predicts that Seoul, Gyeonggi Province and a part of western Gangwon Province will have snowfall on April 10 and 11.

This is the first time in the past 20 years that the country has snowed in the capital in mid-April. The most recent snow was on April 10, 1993.

Snow often falls heavily in Seoul capital in November and December.

According to the KMA, since the weather information system was put into use in Korea in 1908, the phenomenon of snowfall between April only occurred seven times in 1910, 1911, 1929, 1943, 1949, 1977 and 1993.

It is forecasted that in Seoul, light snow falls, and in the western and mountainous areas of Gangwon Province, snow falls from 1-3cm thick. Some places will have rain with small 5mm.

A KMA expert said that this unusual weather is caused by high pressure in the area around the Korean peninsula.'The cold air in the upper atmosphere has been blocked by the whirlpool in Japan. So cold air has enveloped the whole Korean peninsula, accumulating into water clouds and falling snow. "

Cherry blossoms are continuing to flourish in all regions of the country until April 12, when temperatures are lower than the average of the last 30 years (from 1981 to 2010).
