Signs you lack of vitamin A

Vitamin A is indispensable in promoting good vision, immune system function and even ensuring reproductive health (especially in women).

Vitamin A is also involved in supporting other organs such as lungs, kidneys and even heart function. Here are 4 signs and symptoms that often occur with the body lacking vitamin A.

1. Vision impairment

Vitamin A is essential in the synthesis of a substance called Rhodopsin (pigment in the retina). Rhodopsin facilitates the natural adaptation of the eyes to dim light, and if you lack vitamin A you will begin to experience a hard time seeing in the dark.

Vitamin A deficiency can lead to dry eyes, due to changes in eye tissue patterns that make the cornea dry, wrinkled. Dry eyes also affect the secretion of the lacrimal glands, making the body unable to moisten the eyes, as well as removing bacteria or any foreign body in the eye. Untreated dry eyes can lead to blindness.

2. Skin problems

One of the most common signs of vitamin A deficiency is the change in skin texture. Lack of vitamin A can lead to dry skin, manifesting dry and flaky skin.

Vitamin A deficiency can also cause phrynoderma, with acne in many different areas of the body such as arms, thighs, back, shoulders, abdomen and even buttocks. Phrynoderma is caused by a blockage of sweat glands.

3. Breathing problems

Vitamin A deficiency is also closely related to respiratory problems. It makes the lining of the nose, throat, bronchi and trachea become dry and rough, making the respiratory system more susceptible to infection.

4. Reproductive system problems (female)

Vitamin A deficiency can also cause problems in female reproductive organs. The most common signs include vaginitis, keratosis in the renal pelvis, fallopian tubes, bladder, uterus and other parts of the genital tract. Failure to resolve these problems quickly may lead to infertility.
