Small tsunami landed in Japan after Chile earthquake

About a dozen small tsunamis this morning hit the northeastern coast of Japan, a day after a massive earthquake off the coast of Chile.

A 80cm high tsunami was recorded in the coastal city of Kuji, northeastern Japan at 9:38 am, the Japanese meteorological agency said, while smaller waves landed in other areas.

Images on local television show no obvious damage to the coastal areas of Japan, due to the impact of the magnitude 8.3 earthquake, causing at least 11 deaths in Chile.

However, meteorological official Yohei Hasegawa warned people to "avoid working or playing at sea". "At this tsunami level, we don't have to worry about land being flooded, but the underwater flow can be very strong and you can be swept away , " he said.

The systems informing the public along the coast have issued warnings, while rescue vehicles patrol and scurry horns, calling for distance from the beach.

The authorities warned the wave could be as tall as 1m, but no case has been reported, and officials have not received any information about human and property damage."But we continue to call on people to stay away from the beach," said Daiki Numabukuro, Kuji city official.

Large areas along the Japanese coast, including Kuji, were flattened during the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The disaster also caused a nuclear accident in Fukushima.

The September 16 earthquake rocked off the northern coast of Santiago, Chile, killing at least 11 people and causing tsunamis that devastated the coast. This 8.3-magnitude earthquake is the sixth strongest game in Chilean history and the strongest game in the world this year, to date.
