Japan's Dai Nippon Printing (DNP) has announced a plastic cover that could soon replace the glass screen of smartphones and tablets.

The new material has been reported to be as tough as the Gorilla Glass (a high-quality, alkali-aluminosilicate, glass-resistant, scratch-resistant, high-grade glass) and resistant to scratches. And because it is made of plastic, it can be bent.

This cover is a triple-layered material: a fingerprint-resistant layer on the front and a plastic backing that is covered with a hardener on the back. It is a 0.5mm thick plastic sheet that can be manufactured in any size. DNP said the new plate test showed that it had a pencil hardness of 9H, which is equivalent to the hardness of Gorilla Glass - commonly used for displays of handheld electronics.

The smartphone screen will be better thanks to this new material.

DNP has also brushed this material samples 200 times with steel cotton with a weight of 500g / cm ² and did not see any little scratches. The new screen material will be a better choice than glass because they are less scratched and less prone to breaking. The company said the transparency of the screen is very high, the turbidity and transparency of the results are 0.4% and 91.2%, respectively. In addition, the fingerprint test showed that the contact angle was 103 degrees for water and 56 degrees for oil.

DNP said it plans to ship samples to hardware makers this month, and is ready for bulk shipments by mid-next year. They also expect sales of 10 billion yen to 121 million dollars by 2014. If everything goes according to plan, hardware makers will definitely use new materials for their products. . That means consumers can buy devices with new displays around this time next year.
