Stephen Hawking: People will live on another planet for the next 100 years

The physical prince is confident that humans will colonize other planets for a century, the best candidate is planet Proxima b.

British professor Stephen Hawking said that starting the process of settling on another planet will ensure the long-term survival of humanity when the Earth becomes a place that cannot live in the context of climate change and pollution. and disease outbreaks, according to the International Business Times.

"I believe we will find a way to overcome the huge gaps in the universe in the next few years , " Hawking said in a search for the New Earth on BBC channel last night. "One of our great strengths is to come up with new ideas and turn them into advanced technology . That power will take us to Proxima. In the next 100 years, we will embark on this. Greatest adventure ever ".

Last year, scientists identified Proxima b as the most exotic planet ever discovered. The planet is only 4 light years from Earth and is considered a possible destination for interstellar travel in the future.

Not only that, Proxima b is also located in an area with the possibility of life called Goldilocks , the area around the orbit where liquid water can exist on the surface if atmospheric pressure is appropriate. If converging favorable conditions, Proxima b can support human settlements, although scientists still do not know much about the planet today.

While conventional missile spacecraft need about 120,000 years to reach Proxima b, a technology that is being developed can significantly speed up.

The ambitious Breakthrough project Starshot with funding from Professor Hawking, billionaire Mark Zuckerberg and Yuri Milner is a mission to prove the feasibility of interstellar travel.

The Starshot project will launch thousands of nano spacecraft from a mother ship. Micro-spacecraft only a few centimeters in diameter and weigh a few grams move by laser light on the ground. Laser light focuses on the sail on the ship and propels the ship at 20% of the speed of light. Traveling at this speed, the probe can reach Proxima b for 20 years.

If successful, the mission could pave the way for future spacecraft carrying travelers when technology is modern enough."We must be prepared within 100 years. Proxima colonization is not like any previous challenge , " said Hawking.
