After more than a year of research on the topic of "Handling red mud into cultivated land" according to the orders of Vietnam Coal and Mineral Group, Da Lat University has experimented with planting a number of well-grown trees.

Red mud is a highly alkaline toxic substance.
Dr. Nguyen Xuan Tung, Faculty of Environment at Dalat University, said that the scientific group has focused on studying the approach to treating red mud waste in bauxite - alumina projects. Red mud after being treated can be used as a soil for agricultural production.
Experimental results on some crops show that plants grow very well.
The team neutralized red mud with organic waste such as post-fungus residue, yeast and peat waste, uniform ratio 1: 1: 1: 1, to create new soil suitable for plants. grow.
With this type of soil, the research team experimented with some plants such as dragon fruit, aloe vera (aloe vera), Nopal cacti and pineapple plants with high resistance. As a result, these plants are able to grow very well.
According to Dr. Tung, red mud is a waste that contains many extremely toxic chemicals. Plants cannot grow and grow on this soil type. For example, corn, tomatoes, rice grown on red mud after two days will die completely.
Research results show that most crops are sensitive to mineral mixtures in red mud. Crops will be inhibited to grow very badly, leading to partial necrosis and death when Na 2 SO 4 salts completely whiten the soil and plants, causing roots to die after 3-10 days.
