Successful breeding like strawberries is blue
Recently on the market appeared a picture of green strawberries. Looking at the strange appearance, many people do not believe that they are actually cultivated from seeds but as a result of coloring food. However, this is really the new strawberry variety developed by scientists.
For years, agricultural scientists have studied genetic changes that allow strawberries to survive in cooler temperatures. They have been doing that by transferring a part of the Arctic flounder gene . This cold-water species has a gene that produces an antidepressant that protects itself when living in cold water.
After isolating the gene that produces antifreeze and incorporating it into the fruit, there is a kind of green strawberry. Not only do they change in color, they are not affected by cold ice, even when put in the freezer.
A scientific study in 2004 conducted by scientists in Thailand once mentioned: "The transgenic encoding of anticoagulant proteins (AFP) from Arctic fish is one of the methods to increase frost resistance. In fact, strawberries are very soft and have a short lifespan, and strawberries must be stored at a low temperature to extend their shelf life. Therefore, AFP can solve this problem ".
Studies are ongoing but the question is whether consumers dare to eat if blue strawberries are mass produced?
