Successful synthesis of 'miracle materials' invented 60 years ago
For decades, scientists have been trying to synthesize a new allotrope of carbon, called graphyne, but they have not succeeded until now.
Graphyne has long been of particular interest to scientists because of its similarities to the "wonder material" graphene - an allotropic form of the carbon atom that has been prized and even won the Nobel Prize in Physics. 2010. However, despite decades of research, they have not been able to create this type of object.

But at least six decades ago, scientists invented a new format they call graphyne. The material's interest in the material was further heightened when they successfully made graphene, a substance that has been dubbed "wonderful" since its invention 17 years ago.
By definition, Graphyne is more like graphene than in name. Both are the thickest carbon structures ever recorded. However, while graphene has a simple honeycomb structure, made up of constantly repeating hexagonal rings, graphyne is much more complex.
Specifically, they form benzene rings, which are spaced further apart and joined by Alkyn bonds. Where every 2 carbon atoms will form a triple bond between 3 electron pairs. "This could be the next-generation wonder material of graphene," said Wei Zhang, a professor of chemistry at the University of Colorado Boulder.
Although the new material has been successfully fabricated, the team still wants to take a closer look at its specific properties, in order to create the material on a large scale, or to manipulate it into useful forms. for life.
The study, published May 9 in the journal Nature Synthesis, fills a long-standing gap in the science of carbon materials. The research also has the potential to open up entirely new possibilities for research in electronics, optics and semiconductor materials, the scientists say.
