Sun reduced the price of service support by half of Red Hat

Red Hat has faced a new threat from Sun Microsystems, which claims it will reduce support prices for the open source Solaris 10 operating system .

According to Sun's announcement on January 17, the price to support Solaris 10 will be half that of Red Hat, the largest Linux distributor today. Meanwhile, Red Hat is also faced with a series of price reductions from many other vendors, most of which are Oracle, Microsoft and Novel collaboration announcements to push Linux support prices lower than made by Red Hat.

Solaris is known as a Unix-based operating system, and all Linux distributors use a similar model. Solaris itself is free because it is an open source operating system, but Sun will charge a price to support the service.

Sun's annual Solaris support contract ranges between 240-1,180 USD, for one or two x86 servers, depending on the user's choice: use the "basic" or "basic" package. premium "(premium). Sun's "basic" package is about 40% lower than the "premium" package, and 50% lower than Red Hat's same service pack.

Meanwhile, according to the announcement on Red Hat's website, the basic Red Hat Linux ES package costs $ 349 / year / system; Red Hat Linux AS premium package is priced at 2,499 USD.

Red Hat has yet to comment on Sun's decision to reduce new support prices; however, after Oracle reduced its support price last fall, its CEO, Matthew Szulik, said Red Hat will not reduce prices due to rival competition pressure.
