The lamp was used by soldiers at night when stationed at the late Roman fortress of Mezad Tzafir on the Scorpions Ascent pass, east of the Negev desert.

Before the invention of electric lighting, humans were aware of the need for artificial light and always tried to 'dispel the darkness'.
