AMOEBA, a circular tub made by Mitsui Engineering (Japan) in their Akishima laboratory, allows the creation of characters by standing water waves.

This impressive demonstration device consists of 50 wave generators placed around a cylindrical tank 1.5 meters wide and 0.3 meters deep. Wave generators move vertically to generate cylindrical waves. Each wave is viewed as a "pixel" , 10 cm in diameter and 3.8 cm in height. They gather together into straight lines and certain shapes.

AMOEBA can create all alphabetic characters, as well as some Japanese characters. Time to create each character takes about 15 seconds. Akishima Laboratory expects to sell this device to outdoor parks in combination with other fountain, lighting and sound technologies.
